To identify the main idea in a text

I learned  to skim and scan through a text and find the main idea of the text. I learned it  by first reading an article about ducks. Then After a few weeks later we had to skim and scan the article. Once we skim and scanned the article  we had to find the five W's and the H Then we had to write 25 keywords to do with the article.
